Death crash family had just begun new life after father’s jail sentence

A father killed in a road accident with his family had been trying to build a new life after being caught up in a violent shooting, it was disclosed yesterday.

Mr Steven O'Malley, 43, and his partner Ms Marie Allen, 30, who was pregnant with twins, died when their BMW was in collision with a coach packed with day trippers in Lincolnshire on Tuesday.

Laura Allen, eight, Reece Allen, five - Marie's children by a previous partner - and her 18-month-old daughter by Mr O'Malley, Shannon O'Malley, also died.

Thirty-eight people on the coach, which was taking day trippers back to the West Midlands, were injured.

It emerged yesterday that former miner Mr O'Malley had been jailed by Sheffield Crown Court for three years in 1994 after admitting unlawful wounding.

Mr O'Malley had fired at gipsies with a shotgun after they gatecrashed his party. The court was told he had fled to a secret address with his family to ''escape any possible revenge attack'' from the victim's associates, said police.

The family moved from South Yorkshire to Skegness after his release, before settling down in the village of Brinkhill near Louth. The accident happened just three miles from their home.

Neighbours and police in Lincolnshire said the family had been living under the name of Grant.

Mr O'Malley's brother Arthur, 45, said: ''They had so much to live for. We're all still struggling to come to terms with what has happened.''

He denied reports that his brother had fled to Lincolnshire to get away from the criminal underground in South Yorkshire.

Police said the accident investigation was continuing.
